Leading By Example: Effective School Leadership.

Mr. Ahmed Fahmy Hamzawy, School Principal for Tameya Elementary School for girls in Fayoum governorate has quickly become a role model for successful school management. Mr. Hamzawy is proactive and eager to implement new and effective management strategies.

El Margoushy primary school is approximately 12 km from Matay school district, in Minya governorate and is one of 44 primary School Based Reform (SBR) schools in Minya participating in the USAID funded Technology for Improved Learning Outcomes (TILO) project. As a result of implementing the TILO technology and training model in TILO schools, the school management and teachers took on a community service initiative. The objective of the community initiative is to eliminate illiteracy among the village inhabitants.

Safaa is 15 years old and lives in the small village of Abou Harb, 50Km north of Menia. Dropping out of school at 10 years old, she had received little education, and was intimidated by teacher attitudes. “I believe the school environment was the main reason I dropped out. Mainly, I didn’t feel that I was learning anything. Teachers preferred using force and intimidation instead of listening to the students. I wasn’t able to understand a thing during class, and was constantly so scared.”

Providing Health Care for the Local Community

Banat Tamya School in Fayoum was one of the schools to receive training on Community Outreach this year as a result of the TILO/DCGEP partnership. During the training, the Community project team identified the following challenge affecting the school as well as the surrounding community. The residents around the school had limited access to poor-quality health-care, due to Fayoum’s high levels of poverty.

Rural School Becomes Training Hub for Teachers

Definno’s school management, teachers, administrators and supervisors received intensive training on effective teaching methods (critical thinking, problem solving, classroom management), leadership and IT integration. With highly motivated and capable teachers, Definno has quickly taken the lead in becoming Etsa idara’s ‘Training Hub’ where teachers from surrounding schools come to be trained.

Ali Abdel Aziz School in Beni Suef governorate was suffering from an overload of students, exceeding its capacity and infra-structure. As a result, any extra space, regardless of size, was used as a classroom.
